Alexandru Mitriță leaves for international duty

Well, this sucks.

After having breakout performances — performances that saw him score four goals in two games — New York City FC DP winger Alexandru Mitrita has left the team to join Romania for their UEFA Euro Play-Off matches against Norway and Austria. Meanwhile, players such as Maxime ChanotAlexander Callens, and Anton Tinnerholm have all had their international call-ups blocked and will remain with the team.

Dylan Butler — a conributor for both MLS and Pro Soccer USA — broke the news of Mitri’s departure this afternoon.

According to Butler, Mitrita was allowed to leave due to an undisclosed “personal matter” back home in Romania. Had it not been for that, it’s very possible NYCFC would’ve refused his call-up as well.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Mitrita will be forced to quarantine for two weeks upon returning to the United States. This means Mitri could miss up to six games out of NYCFC’s remaining eight left to play in the 2020 regular season.

In his absence, the polarizing Jesús Medina is expected to play in the attacking midfield.
