Another goalkeeper has entered the New York City FC fold as the team announced the signing of MLS and USL veteran Greg Ranjitsingh.
Ranjitsingh joins on a contract through 2026 that includes an option to extend through the 2027 season. The 31-year-old is originally from Pickering in Ontario, Canada, and he's also a former Trinidad and Tobago international player.
He becomes the fourth goalkeeper on a First Team contract with NYCFC alongside Matt Freese, Alex Rando, and his former Toronto FC teammate Tomás Romero.
Ranjitsingh made four MLS appearances for Toronto FC 2023, which was his most recent MLS experience. He's well-traveled around the league, having also been on the rosters of Philadelphia Union, Minnesota United, LAFC and Orlando City – but he's only ever made nine career appearances in MLS and never appeared in a game for Philadelphia or LAFC.
Besides those four matches with Toronto, Ranjitsingh played three times for Minnesota United in 2020 and twice for Orlando City in 2019. It's a very limited sample size, but Ranjitsingh has allowed 2.33 goals per 90 minutes (21 goals conceded) and has a 62.3% save percentage across his nine career MLS games while posting a record of 0 W-1 D-8 L.
The bulk of his professional playing time came across three seasons with Louisville City FC in the USL from 2015 through 2018. He made 90 career appearances for Louisville City across all competitions in that time, keeping 39 clean sheets.
Ranjitsingh now slides into a spot in the NYCFC goalkeeper depth chart which was short a player after the trade of Luis Barraza to DC United early in the offseason.
Goalkeeper is a position of at least minor intrigue at NYCFC, considering Tom Bogert of GiveMeSport reported that Matt Freese is drawing European transfer interest, and given the team's long-tenured backup Barraza is now gone to an Eastern Conference rival.
There is at least one certainty at goalkeeper: Despite a new Head Coach coming in, NYCFC will have the same goalkeeper coach the club has had since it began play in 2015.
The official press release confirming Greg Ranjitsingh, which you can read in its entirety below, quotes Ranjitsingh as saying "I look forward to working with Rob Vartughian and the rest of the goalkeeper core, some of whom I already have experience working with."
Vartughian hasn't officially been confirmed as part of Jansen's coaching staff, but this signing announcement all but does that. It appears he and Mehdi Ballouchy will continue as NYCFC assistant coaches in the new Pascal Jansen era, which now includes Greg Ranjitsingh as a goalkeeper.
