Gotham FC head coach Juan Carlos Amorós has been nominated for 2023 NWSL Coach of the Year.
The head coach has transformed the team since joining the team last November. Gotham finished dead last in 2022, when they managed to score just 16 goals in 22 games. Fast-forward to last weekend, when the Goths outplayed a tough North Carolina Courage on the road in the NWSL Championship Quarterfinals for the first postseason win in club history.
The other two nominees for Coach of the Year are Angel City FC’s Becky Tweed and the San Diego Wave’s Casey Stoney. You can vote for the Coach of the Year and other NWSL awards here.
Two Gotham players were nominated for awards as well.
The legendary Ali Krieger was nominated for Defender of the Year, and newcomer Jenna Nighswonger was nominated for Rookie of the Year.
Krieger announced her retirement earlier this year. Her last regular-season game was the Decision Day draw with the Kansas City Current. Krieger’s goal-line save that afternoon was the difference between Gotham advancing to the playoffs for just the third time in club history, or ending the season with a home loss.
Amorós, Krieger, Nighswonger, and the rest of Gotham next face the Portland Thorns at Providence Park in the NWSL Championship Semifinals. That game will take place on Sunday, November 5 at 7 pm ET, and will be broadcast on CBS Sports.
