The first reverse fixture of 2025 sends New York City FC up to Foxborough, Massachusetts to play New England Revolution on Matchday 9, not long after these two teams faced off at Yankee Stadium on Matchday 4.

New York City prevailed 2-1 in the first meeting of the season and they now head to Gillette Stadium looking to build on last weekend's tight 1-0 win over Philadelphia Union.

The Revs have some momentum heading into this match, collecting wins in two of their previous three games and most recently handing Ronny Deila's Atlanta United a loss inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium, though they've struggled to solve New York City these last few seasons.

There's a long history between these two clubs. New York City's 29 matches with New England are the second-most for any team they faced, behind only the 30 games with New York Red Bulls.

NYCFC has a slight historic edge over New England, with a record of 11W-8D-10L. You can chalk that up to recent results: New York City has a record of 3W-2D-0L in their last five matchups, with 6 goals scored and 3 allowed. Look at the last 10 games and it's 5W-4D-1L, with 14 goals scored and 11 allowed. New England's sole win was back on September 4, 2022, when the Revolution triumphed 3-0 behind a 7-save performance from goalkeeper Đorđe Petrović.

New York's only regulation-time victory at Gilette Stadium in that run of games came last May, when Keaton Parks headed home the 82' winner. The 2024 squad also eked out a Leagues Cup knockout-round win on August 9, playing to a 1-1 draw before Justin Haak converted a shootout-winning penalty kick to send NYCFC through to the next round. Then there's the 2-2 extra-time draw on November 30, 2021, a game that New York City went on to win in penalty kicks and advance to the MLS Cup Eastern Conference Final.

New York City Scouting Report

• Player Availability: Malachi Jones (leg) and Jacob Arroyave (knee) remain out.
• Will Agustín Ojeda start again? He had a promising showing vs. Philadelphia on Matchday 8, and just so happened to earn his first MLS start and scored his first MLS goal against New England almost exactly one year to the date of this match, back on April 13, 2024 (at Yankee Stadium, though).
• Kevin O'Toole is quietly putting together a strong season as the unquestioned starter at left-back for New York City. The 26-year-old ranks inside the top 10 of all MLS players for his number of interceptions, blocks, and dribblers tackled, per FBRef.com's leaderboards.
• It's not all sunshine and roses for that NYCFC defense, though. This visual shared recently by Jamon Moore of American Soccer Analysis shows that New York City is allowing an elevated number of shots that grade out as "Good" or "Great" when measured by their non-penalty expected goals (npxG) figures.

As promised, here are the MLS Eastern Conference *goals against* xG tiers after Matchday 8. Fewer is better here! 👀 CLB, MIA, NSH 😬 DCU, NYC, MTL

•  Matt Freese has been doing his part despite opponents finding quality chances in front of his goal. His 30 saves this season rank him fourth among MLS goalkeepers and he's coming off one of his strongest performances, keeping a clean sheet and making three important saves against his former Philadelphia team.
• Alonso Martínez is carrying the NYCFC goalscoring load this season and scored the MLS Goal of the Matchday to beat the Revs a few weeks ago in the Bronx, but one quirk to his five-goals-in-seven-appearances start to 2025: Every goal he scored so far this season has come in the second half of games. Can someone trick Alonso into thinking he just heard Pascal Jansen's halftime talk before this game starts at Gillette?
