New York City FC announce 2025 preseason schedule

They're going back to Cali. But will wildfires urgently tearing through Southern California change New York City FC's plans?

The New York City FC 2025 preseason officially kicks off on Monday, January 13, when players and staff report to the club.

The team will then travel to Santa Barbara, CA on Wednesday, January 16, where they will play friendlies against LA Galaxy, winners of the 2024 MLS Cup, and Real Salt Lake. Both of those games will take place behind closed doors and won't be open to the public or the media.

Then New York City will participate in the 2025 Coachella Invitational in Indio, CA, where they will play friendlies against Sporting Kansas City, San Diego FC, St. Louis City SC, and Minnesota United. Those games are open to the public, and will be live-streamed as well.

Finally, New York City will open the 2025 regular season on Saturday, February 22, when they play Inter Miami at Chase Stadium in Ft. Lauderdale.

It's unclear if the wildfires currently burning in Los Angeles County will affect NYCFC's preseason plans.

Fueled by 100-mph winds and an unusually dry winter, the Palisades Fire expanded from 772 to 2,920 acres in a little less than four hours yesterday, and is now 11,000 acres. There are now three separate fires burning in Los Angeles County, with tens of thousands of homes lost and 70,000 residents ordered to evacuate their homes.

Santa Barbara is just 80 miles north of the Palisades Fire. No large wildfires have been reported to date in Santa Barbara County, but the region is under a Red Flag Alert this week because of the high risk.

Indio, where the Coachella Invitational is to be held, is 128 miles to the east of Los Angeles. No wildfires have been reported in the area. The high winds that are feeding the fires in Los Angeles County are coming off the desert around Indio, which in turn is blowing most of the smoke west towards the Pacific Ocean. But the predominant winds in California come from the west, and a shift is starting to push the smoke toward Los Angeles and Los Angeles International Airport.
