Earlier this afternoon, New York City FC announced they claimed forward Gabe Segal off waivers. The 21-year-old attacker joins from FC Köln II in Regionalliga West, a semiprofessional league in Germany, where he scored one goal in 12 appearances. Segal is expected to play with NYCFC II.
The Maryland native played three seasons at Stanford University, where he won a Pac-12 Championship and earned an All-Pac-12 selection. The signing of Segal continues NYCFC’s propensity to sign players from the academically rigorous schools that top the US News Best Colleges rankings, joining Kevin O’Toole (Princeton University), and Andres Jasson (Yale University). Transfermarkt doesn’t track SAT scores, but NYCFC surely have one of the strongest squads in MLS when it comes to vocabulary, reading comprehension, and quantitive reasoning.
Segal is a United States Men’s Youth International, having played for the U18, U17, U16, and U14 teams.

He is a young, talented, domestic attacker who had an excellent collegiate career at Stanford alongside playing for the United States Youth National Team. We are excited to have the opportunity to continue his development,” said Sporting Director David Lee. “The addition of NYCFC II to our player development pathway allows us to take advantage of these opportunities with the ability to play regular minutes in MLS NEXT Pro competition.”
According to a statement issued by the club, Segal is signed through the end of the 2023 season. The statement made no mention of an option.
