Matthew “MD Myers has been on a tear all season for NYCFC II. The 22-year-old was selected by NYCFC in the 2023 MLS SuperDraft and has been a key figure for NYCFC II this season, scoring 19 goals in 28 games.
His majestic goal tally put him in a three-way tie for the MLS NEXT Pro Golden Boot, alongside Colorado Rapids II striker Remi Cabral and Orlando City B forward Jack Lynn.
Myers played 2454 minutes for NYCFC II and started every game in the No 9 position. The former Rutgers standout is best described as an opportunistic striker who will pounce on any loose ball in front of goal. He had a total of 45 on target and scoring attempts and boasted a conversion rate of 26%.
The numbers are impressive, but will we ever see him in the first team?
In a much younger NYCFC side, it is very likely that Myers could get a chance. After all, the squad that played in NYCFC’s 3-0 win against Toronto FC was the youngest this season, with an average age of 23.2. With the MLS season coming to an end, we may have to wait until next season to see Myers in the senior squad.
