New York City FC draw Miami 1-1 in Fort Lauderdale: NYCFC should feel hard-done by a stoppage-time goal that let Miami steal a point they didn’t deserve. Here are your NYCFC vs Inter Miami video highlights.
NYCFC were underdogs heading into the game. New York City have won just one away game all season, and this new-look Inter Miami are suddenly the most dangerous team MLS. But the Boys in Pink were without the injured Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba, and NYCFC were the better team for most of the game.
New York City were composed and created chances, but new striker Mounsef Bakrar couldn’t find the finishing touch. The game ended scoreless at the half.
The balance changed after the two teams returned to the field, with Miami making the more dangerous runs. But NYCFC’s quality won out when Santiago Rodríguez scored in the 77′.
Unfortunately for NYCFC, the game didn’t end there. It carried on for another 13 minutes of regulation time and 7 minutes of stoppage time, and Inter Miami scored in the 90+5′ off a set piece: New York City’s season-long tendency to give up late goals – and to go to sleep when defending set pieces – came back to haunt them.
The result isn’t without its controversies. Miami were whistled for 17 fouls, and could have been called for more. They played a cynical game that was more about slashing New York City’s players than creating chances.
Miami were also shown six yellow cards, two of which could have been reds: A Last Player on Goal pull-down to Rodríguez and a studs-to-the ankle challenge to Andrés Perea could have sent two of Inter’s players to the sidelines.
Instead NYCFC will have to be content with earning a point on the road, and to finishing the day by climbing up to eighth place in the Eastern Conference table.
