New York City FC returned to MLS play tonight in their brand-new NYC Parks Kit, falling to Minnesota United by the score of 0-2 at Citi Field. Norwegian center-back Birk Risa made his debut and looked very sharp on defense, while Maxi Moralez provided a much-needed spark in the midfield. But it wasn’t enough. Once again, New York City didn’t capitalize on their chances and only have themselves to blame for the loss: Here are your NYCFC highlights.
NYCFC had several chances in the first half, as Mounsef Bakrar and Santiago Rodríguez both were unable to trouble Minnesota goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair. At the break, New York had attempted nine shots but were only able to place two on target.
Minnesota took the lead early in the second half, as Ján Greguš found the back of the net in the 53rd minute with a perfectly placed finish. NYCFC winger Julián Fernández made his MLS debut in the 60th minute, and had a golden chance on an open goal. But he blasted his shot on the side netting. Andrés Perea also made his debut after coming on in the 61st minute.
New York City continued to push forward in attack, but failed to finish their chances. Minnesota capped their win in stoppage time when Ménder García beat Luis Barraza in a Minnesota counterattack.
New York City’s playoff streak looks to be in serious jeopardy. The team have just nine games left this season, and will next face Supporters Shield-leading FC Cincinnati on the road.
