New York City FC returned to Yankee Soccer Stadium tonight and took down CF Montréal in fine fashion, winning by a score of 2-0. NYCFC defended well, took advantage of their chances in front of goal, and controlled the game from start to finish. The victory also marked the team’s first MLS win since July 1 — which was also against Montréal. Here are your NYCFC vs Montreal highlights.
The game started out even, as both sides battled to create chances. NYCFC found their breakthrough in the 29th minute when Braian Cufré played a long pass to Andres Jasson, who executed it perfectly past Johnathan Sirois to score his second goal of the season. Eight minutes later, Mounsef Bakrar scored his first MLS goal with an assist from Birk Risa and once again hit Cristiano Ronaldo’s “siuuu” celebration.
After 45 minutes of play, NYCFC looked organized on defense and clinical in front of goal – the two things New York City has struggled with multiple times this season.
NYCFC 2 – 0 CF Montréal: Rate the Players
The tempo of the game would slow down in the second half, with NYCFC comfortably defending their lead. Matt Freese made a few comfortable saves to earn his first MLS clean sheet for New York City and looked very composed between the posts.
The win helped NYCFC’s playoff chances immensely and moved the team closer to a playoff spot – three points off the Chicago Fire in ninth place.
New York City will return to the Bronx on Saturday in another must-win game against Western Conference opponent the Vancouver Whitecaps.
