Toronto were the better side throughout the night. While the NYCFC attack looked flat an uninspired, the Toronto attack launched one incursion after another into the New York City box.

Toronto forward CJ Sapong scored the only goal of the night. The 34-year-old striker was signed from Nashville SC just before the Primary Transfer Window closed on Monday, but he looked like he has been training with the team all season.
What was billed as a battle between Toronto goalkeeper Sean Johnson and his former team instead was a masterclass in positioning and cutting off passing lanes. Toronto did both well, and New York City didn’t manage to put together a single coherent attack. Johnson was never tested.
Not the whole story, but Ilenic was pinned into defensive duties and seldom made his signature attacking runs. O’Toole was fairly invisible. Without aggressive runs on the wings, Toronto easily contained the attack all night.
