We still don’t know who New York City FC’s new signings will be for 2021. But we do have an idea for what they’ll be wearing.
Earlier today, Turkish outlet Esvaphane — what looks to be a foreign version of Footy Headlines — released what many to believe to be a leak of NYCFC’s 2021 home kit on their Instagram page.
Longtime NYCFC fans will immediately spot the similarities between the 2021 kit and City’s original home kit from their inaugural 2015 season. There is a noticeable difference, though.
While both kits do rely on the City Blue with white accents, the 2021 kit features some subtle racing stripes — complete with an embroidered NYC monogram — on the front of the kit with the New York flag above the nameplate in the back. The kit also features a thicker white tubing around the collar while a navy blue circle encompasses the badge.
While some supporters have come out in favor of the new home kit, many fans on Twitter have blasted it for being too much of a callback to the original home kit which, all things considered, was a bit bland.
I can only speak for myself. But I actually kinda like it!
I’m a sucker for simplicity. In the age of such loud kits, I don’t mind a “less is more” approach. Yes, the 2021 kit is definitely a callback to days past. But it has enough subtle differences to keep me interested.
Also, from the looks of it, this kit leak seems to be the replica version as it lacks the MLS patches on the sleeves. There also doesn’t seem to be a jock tag, unless the aforementioned NYC monogram at the bottom left of the kit will serve as such.
I’ll happily hold out any real hard-hitting opinion until I see it presented how it will look on gamedays, with numbers, and in natural light.
