Here is another reason to believe the rumor buzzing around the internet that New York City FC’s second kit for the 2022 season will be orange: The Pigeons wore tops the color of ripe Florida oranges in yesterday’s 3-1 win over the New Jersey Red Bulls in a preseason friendly played in Orlando.
NYCFC striker Héber scored twice, finding the back of the net in a competitive match for the first time since injuring his ACL in September, 2020.
Speculation over the color of NYCFC’s second shirts first surfaced when Footy Headlines ran a story titled “Exclusive: New York City 2022 Away Kit to Be Orange?” While the article acknowledges that orange is “not 100% confirmed yet,” Footy Headlines has a solid track record of breaking sartorial news before other outlets. Footy Headlines didn’t include a photo of the shirt or a prototype, but instead used stock images of the NYCFC badge on an orange field.
The preseason uniforms provide a more tantalizing peek at what could be the best second kit since the black jersey with an orange dart of City’s inaugural season in 2015. That year, the home kit was celeste with white trim, the same color scheme as the current home shirt.
You can see a complete history of NYCFC’s kits at Football Kit Archive.
Long used for NYCFC’s training kits, orange will likely prove to be popular with the fans in the stands. It’s the color of supporters group Los Templados, and it figures prominently in The Third Rail’s palette for 2022.
We should note that City has a spectacular record while wearing the color: So far this year, NYCFC is undefeated when playing in orange.
