Both New York City FC and Philadelphia Union followed the script: NYCFC dominated possession and created chances, but an opportunistic Union were dangerous in transition and ended the night with a deserved 2-1 win. One positive note for New York City was the goal from Andres Jasson, his first in MLS: Here are your NYCFC highlights.
NYCFC limp into the Leagues Cup break with a dispiriting loss after riding an eight-game undefeated streak. In those games, New York City always managed to find a way to even the score – or give away an equalizer – but the team ran out of luck in Chester, PA.
Give credit to the Union, who found the back of the net twice despite missing top scorer Julián Carranza, who was serving a ban after earning a red card midweek. This is a team that always finds a way, at least when facing NYCFC: The Union are 5-0-0 in recent matchups between the two.

And place some of the blame on NYCFC’s lapses. Philadelphia’s first goal capitalized on a sloppy giveaway by Santiago Rodríguez in the attacking third that caught out his teammates. The second goal was the product of poor goalkeeping by Luis Barraza, who came off his line and failed to smother a loose ball.
In a repeat of last week, NYCFC’s lone goal was scored by a Homegrown player. This time it was Andres Jasson, who lashed a shot at goalkeeper Andre Blake, then pounced on the deflection to knock it into the back of the net. Scoring against the best goalkeeper in MLS? Not a bad first career goal.
NYCFC vs Union Instant Reaction: Talles Magno’s Irish goodbye?
NYCFC’s next MLS league game is far off in the future – August 20, to be specific, when they face Minnesota United at Citi Field.
But the team will take the field before then, when they host Atlas FC at Citi Field on Sunday, July 23, in the first game of the Leagues Cup group stage.
