Ronald Matarrita called up to Costa Rica national team

The left back is the fourth NYCFC to be summoned by their country this week.

When it comes to international representation, New York City FC has done well for this week. Earlier this week, it was announced by the club that goalkeeper Sean Johnson and winger Jonathan Lewis had gotten the call from the United States national team, while center back Alexander Callens had also received the call to represent Peru.

Days later, it has been announced that NYCFC left back Ronald Matarrita has been summoned to compete with the Costa Rica national team for their friendlies against Guatemala and Jamaica.

This is nothing new for Matarrita; the City left back has made 26 appearances to date for Los Ticos since 2015 and was penciled in to represent Costa Rica at the 2018 World Cup before being scratched after receiving an injury in training.

Thus far in 2019, ‘Mata’ has yet to make a first-team appearance as Domé Torrent has favored Ben Sweat in the season’s first two games against Orlando City and D.C. United respectively. But a big-time performance on the international circuit could certainly change that and ensure Matarrita is given another shot to reclaim his starting position in the near future.

Congrats on the call-up, Mata! We know you’ll do us proud.
