A long-rumored departure is now official: Talles Magno has left New York City FC to join Sport Club Corinthians Paulista on loan through June 2025, with an option to extend the loan through December 2025.
No mention of any future transfer fee going from Corinthians to New York City, but in the official announcement, it’s said that Talles has extended his existing MLS contract through the end of 2027—a pact which pays him nearly $1.2 million a season and was set to run through December 2026 as of the latest MLS player salary report.
The 22-year-old Brazilian heads to a new club that sits in 18th place in Brazil's Série A, so they will be hoping his arrival helps spark a climb up the table. This will be a return to Brazil, a place where Talles made 68 appearances for Vasco da Gama while in his teens.
His former club was one of multiple teams in his homeland—joined by Palmeiras and Atlético-MG—reported to have held an interest in bringing Talles back to Brazil.
Talles Magno now leaves for Corinthians amidst a rough 2024 season in MLS with New York City, one in which he's been injured or hardly used even when healthy, leading to the player expressing disappointment about his situation and an expectation that he'd be leaving this summer.
Across his parts of four seasons with NYCFC, Talles Magno made 101 appearances in all competitions and scored 19 goals while handing out 11 assists. He helped the team win its first silverware, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 2021 Eastern Conference final win over Philadelphia Union, then successfully converting his kick during the penalty shootout that won MLS Cup in Portland.
What will this mean for New York City and its roster during the rest of 2024 and beyond? The departure of Talles opens up a Designated Player spot, but there's no injection of transfer cash, as he's leaving on loan and not an outright sale to Corinthians.
