New York City FC defender Tayvon Gray was injured while on international duty with the Jamaica national football team, and has returned to the United States.

The 21-year-old right made his first start for the Reggae Boyz last Thursday when they faced Grenada in a CONCACAF Nations League matchup, but had to leave the game with a reported hamstring injury. Jamaica went on to win the match 1-4, and now sit in first place win Group B after four games.

NYCFC have yet to issue a statement regarding Gray, but the Jamaica Football Federation posted a statement that the defender is back with the club to receive treatment.

The severity of the injury is unclear, as is Gray’s availability for New York City.

NYCFC have just one game left in the 2023 season, a Decision Day matchup with Chicago Fire on Saturday, October 21, at Citi Field. New York City are in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2015. The club could be eliminated on Wednesday, October 18, if Charlotte FC defeat Inter Miami CF.

New York City’s other right-back, Mitja Ilenič, is currently on international duty with the Slovenia U21 team.

The 18-year-old started in Slovenia’s 3-0 win over the Cyprus U21 in a Euro U21 Qualification matchup last Friday, and will likely feature in tomorrow’s game against the Austria U21 team. Slovenia are currently in second place in Group H, with six points after three games. Slovenia trail the French U21 but are ahead of Austria.
