Earlier today, Brazilian sports journalist Nadja Mauad reported that New York City FC winger Thiago is on his way to Club Athletico Paranaense in Brazil’s Série A. Writing in ge, Mauad stated that NYCFC and Athletico already reached an agreement, and that the 22-year-old is expected to be registered with the club before today’s Copa Liberators eligibility deadline.

Maud goes on to report that Thiago will join on a season-long loan, with an option to buy.

Thiago signed with NYCFC in May 2021, and has scored some scintillating goals for the club over the years. A little over one month after joining the team, he made a solo run to beat DC United in the 94th minute — that goal was voted by Hudson River Blue readers as the third-best in NYCFC history:

Fast, technical, and physical, Thiago can be a menacing attacker. Two weeks ago, he once again scored a game-winner against DC United when the winger came on as a substitute in the 80th minute and found the back of the net just eight minutes later.

Still, Thiago failed to establish himself as a regular starter at NYCFC despite these flashes of brilliance. Thiago made 34 appearances for NYCFC last year in all competitions but scored only 5 goals. Despite given the opportunity to fill in at the No 9 after the midseason departure of Taty Castellanos, he was unable to make the position his.

According to Mauad, Thiago will join his new club within the next few days.
