New York City FC drew an Inter Miami that was without Lionel Messi at the we-don’t-need-no-stinking-vowels DRV PNK Stadium on a tropical evening in Southern Florida: Now it’s time for you to vote on your NYCFC player ratings.
The ratings form will remain open until midnight on Sunday, October 1; the results will be published on Monday, October 2.
Three Thoughts:
- Santiago Rodríguez was the best player on the field all night: He deserved his goal, and arguably was fouled off a few more
- Giving up late goals is a bad habit this NYCFC need to break
- A point ain’t bad though, right?

bothered to get in to give Pellegrini 1. how could we prevent Cushing’s itch to get Pellie on, pls? all in all, we should have scored one or four in the 1st half. this is a simple game. when you don’t score when you can, you don’t win.
good signs:
Keaton’s back with good form. Jasson, Gray gets better. Perea didn’t get injured from that effin’ tackle—how could was it not a direct red? Santi seems more focused on playing than whining.
bad signs:
Pellegrini still over Fernandez? what’s up with Alonzo Martinez? he seemed promising? can we possibly get Pellegrini down from the 1st sub choice for the offense line? pls? pls?
Possibly Cushing views Fernandez and Martinez as offensive subs, and his goal was to park the bus after we scored, which never works out because the players don’t seem to know how to waste time properly. Their goal came after we decided to try and play through on goal for some reason 1) without the personnel who could actually do that effectively and 2) instead of passing backwards/maintaining possession or going to the corner flag. We just don’t seem to know how to close out games unless we have a multi goal lead.
I’m willing to give Bakrar a bit of a pass, unlike some other people on a different social media app, but only a little, because Taty went through the exact same kind of drought–would get himself into the right positions and just not be able to finish–and look what he became. Finishing or not, we still play better with Baki on the pitch than off. That said… those misses were atrocious.
Sometimes, though, you do have to grind out 1-0 wins for one reason or another. Tonight should have been one. But bad refereeing changes games. How did Busquets not get a persistent infringement yellow? Arroyo’s challenge on Perea was one of the clearest reds you and I have ever seen–studs showing, left his feet, contact on the high ankle, significant force on a planted leg. Somehow doesn’t get recommended for review. If there’s a retrospective ban then we can add it to the list. And seven minutes was absolutely ridiculous. One stoppage for the red that wasn’t, one stoppage for Santi’s goal, and a bunch of subs. I felt it should have been five. But Messi League Soccer need their star team to make the playoffs. We always talk about “oh, if we had just played better we wouldn’t be in this situation”. But you know what? If the referee had refereed the game better, we also wouldn’t be in this situation.
Very true the only thing this league needs to take it to another level is the referees. On and off the field, on the sidelines and on VAR these refs need to be on on other level because the level of play has already been rising for some time.
Take off your Red Bull blinders for a second, people. Stevie C and Danny H did a bang-up job tonight, and Higganbotham in particular showed he did proper research on us unlike some other broadcast teams. I remember there was a piece on here criticizing him for his simplistic explanation of Taty’s goal against Red Bulls at RBA last season. His description of how we neutralized Busquets in the first half and how we had to adjust in the second certainly made up for that tonight.
absolutely agree with ya on the commentators/anchors did a non-biased & terrific job last night. they seemed/sounded to have known & researched the both teams past & up-to-date with practical insights and references. i gave 8 to the questionnaire in the rating.
People are going to hate on Cangialosi because he was the Red Bull guy… well our very own Joe Tolleson was also the Red Bull guy before latching on with us, although he stopped doing Red Bull games long before we even existed.
Steve did three matches on national TV with us involved, two of them derbies, and was excellent in all three. Can’t say the same for Shep.
